Brompton Food Market
They sell rare breed meat from Yorkshire, fresh fish from Cornwall, seasonal fruit and vegetables, a huge range of British and continental cheeses and charcuterie, oils, vinegars, jams, sauces, spices and lother goodies … and a great selection of wines, craft beers and artisan spirits.
Their hidden garden is out the back of the shop, away from the traffic and crowds of South Kensington. During the winter it’s covered and heated with sheepskin-covered seats and blankets to wrap yourself in. Come summer you’ll find the perfect sun trap which is full from mid-morning onwards every day. It’s a real gem and they serve a menu to match which changes daily depending on the season.
Owned and run by David Turcan and Luke Mackay, friends for 20 years and former residents of the borough, the shop harks back to a bygone age when customers had time to browse, to handle the produce and interact with the shopkeeper.
Despite the inherent beauty of the shop, it is really about the produce; carefully sourced from around the world with seasonal fruit and veg kept in perfect condition, rare breed meat, aged and cut with knowledge and care … and sparkling fish straight from the boats in Newlyn Harbour.
The shop boasts over 120 suppliers, from tiny cottage industries making gourmet marshmallows to Edinburgh’s finest haggis maker.
